Home dance floor

Practice at home on a floor that is kind to your joints

Turn a spare room or garage into a safe home dance studio. A home dance floor gives you the spring and grip of a good studio, sized to your room.

Tile, carpet and bare concrete are hard on dancers. Tile and concrete have no give, and carpet grabs at every turn.

A practice room suits students who train between classes, competition couples and adults who dance for fitness. We build them across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach.

Spare bedrooms

Often the simplest choice. The room is already cooled, lit and finished.

Garages

Plenty of space and a flat slab. Plan for the heat first; more on that below.

Attics and bonus rooms

Headroom is the big question, so we check the ceiling first.

Condo units

Jumps and taps carry to the unit below. Ask your board about its sound rules early.

What we install

What goes into a home dance floor

We install a sprung subfloor with a marley or wood surface, sized to your room. It is the same layered build we use in studios, scaled down.

Marley makes a good ballet floor for home practice. It also suits contemporary, jazz and hip-hop, grips for turns and wipes clean in seconds.

Wood suits tap, ballroom and Latin. Its warm look also fits a living space.

Tell us what you dance and how often. We suggest a surface at the free visit.

Planning

Six things to plan before the floor goes in

Sort these out before the install date. Then the floor goes in once, and it goes in right.

Room size

Measure the open floor, not the whole room. You need space to travel a few steps and turn. We confirm exact sizes at the visit.

Ceiling height

A sprung subfloor and surface raise the floor a little. Jumps and lifts need headroom, so we check ceilings, fans and lights first.

Door thresholds

The new floor sits higher than the old one. Doors may need trimming to swing over it. We plan a low, smooth edge at each doorway.

Air conditioning

South Florida garages get very hot, and summer humidity makes wood swell. Plan the cooling before the floor goes in, not after.

The base underneath

We check the slab or old floor for level and moisture. Garage slabs often slope toward the door, so that gets leveled out.

Mirrors and barres

Plan wall space for a mirror and a barre. Wall barres need solid backing, so mark the studs before the floor goes in. A portable barre needs no wall work at all.

Think about storms too. Afternoon downpours can blow rain under a garage door. Check the door seal before a new floor goes down.

Our work

Practice rooms and small studios we have floored

These photos are from our own jobs. A home floor uses the same layers, sized to your room.

Home dance floor questions

Can you install a tap floor at home?

Yes. For tap, we suggest a wood surface over the sprung subfloor. It gives a crisp, clear sound under the taps. Tell us what else you dance, and we will plan the floor around it.

Can you put a dance floor in my garage?

Often, yes. A garage slab makes a good base once it is level and dry. The big question is heat, so plan air conditioning before the floor goes in.

Do I need to remove my old floor first?

Not always. A sprung subfloor can often go over flat, solid tile or concrete. Carpet usually comes up first. We check at the free visit.

What flooring is right for a home dance studio?

Marley suits ballet, contemporary, jazz and hip-hop. Wood suits tap, ballroom and Latin. Tell us what you dance, and we will suggest one at the visit.
